On May 22 the Contemporary museum of calligraphy began celebrating the Days of Slavonic writing. The guests could see a new exposition that included true masterpieces of Slavonic calligraphy: old manuscripts, Birch bark calligraphy of our days, first pages of the John the Evangelist gospel, and many other exhibits. Famous calligraphers gave A series of Live performances. Say Andrey Sannikov, a philologist and calligrapher, run a presentatiton "Birch bark manuscripts: beginning of Slavonic writing". And Grigory Marakuev, a calligrapher and icon painter, told and showed how to use Old Russian scripts in monasteries and on icons. Yury Koverdyaev demonstrated the progress of Old Slavonic from ancient times through the reform of Peter the Great. The theme was caught by Elena Epstein-Orlova who told how a famous artist "miriskusnik" Georgy Narbut was using Old Ukrainian scripts in his Art. The one to end the first day's program was Artem Lebedev who not only showed his skill to make calligraphy greetings, but also taught his spectators some ways of making handwritten greetings.
Tomorrow, on May 23 all the comers will also be offered a saturated program. We are waiting a special guest, the President of the National Union of Calligraphers, Petr Chobitko from St.Petersburg who will tell how the contemporary calligraphy use rich traditions of Slavonic writing.
